How to Use Bears & Chairs

Start with receptive language (listening)

Step 1: The adult reads the sentence at the top.

Step 2: The child arranges the objects.

Step 3: The card is revealed and compared to the arrangement.

Then switch roles to practice expressive language (speaking)

Step 1: The child describes the image as best they can.

Step 2: The adult arranges the objects.

Step 3: The card is revealed and compared to the arrangement.

This can easily be used as a small group activity. Sit at a table with 3-5 students. Use a tray to keep all the items together and slide it around as the students take turns listening and speaking. After they make the arrangement, let them keep their card as a “point” and at the end have them go around and describe the images again!
